I'm beginning my 36th year of teaching at Sunnyside Christian School. I've always said it's a great school with great kids that come from great homes. We work together with dads and moms to "train up the child." My favorite thing about teaching is the relationships I have with the students. I strive to make school fun. We work hard, we play hard, and we "love and respect" each other. I get excited about teaching, and I hope that enthusiasm rubs off onto the students. I enjoy the extra-curricular events that go along with school, the programs, ball games, field trips etc. I also enjoy the special events we do throughout the year: field trips to Seattle, first aid unit, teaching CPR – "Annie, Annie can you hear me?" – unit in 8th Science about the human body and family life, traveling to ballgames – both high school girls basketball and Jr. high baseball – and the insect project. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  This verse is embroidered on the back of our high school girls traveling uniforms. (In case you don't know, Mr Smeenk is the Sunnyside Christian High School girls basketball coach.) My wife, Betty, and I have been married for 42 years. We have 3 daughters, 3 sons-in-law and 7 grandchildren. Outside of the classroom I love to work outside and do yard work. I love to visit the family and play with the grandchildren. When we can find the time, Betty and I like to hike.
